We (mum and 2 grown up sons) had the most wonderful 3 days with Chan – he couldn’t have been more kind, thoughtful or fun. We didn’t really know the exact itinery and decided to go with the flow. On the way up to the hills we stopped at a water fall for swimming which was wonderful. The trekking, rafting and village stays were brilliant and Chan cooked for us the most delicious plentiful meals. He managed just the right balance of effort, trekking with time relaxing on the raft or sitting round a fire outside the villagers’ house. Chan was knowledgable and told us lots about the fauna and flora and was happy to discuss anything about Thailand we wanted to ask, always with a sense of fun and understanding. The villagers were very welcoming but be prepared to buy souvenirs. I was happy to do this as I felt we were increasing their income from the sale of goods rather than just donating money to them. We had asked for riding, bathing and feeding elephants too and unfortunately it was rather rushed with a grumpy mahout who shouted at the animals and threw stones at their back sides to make them walk forward. I guess if we had asked for more detail in advance we would have known the time available and perhaps been able to extend it. The mahout did not ride himself but we were urged to just jump on them when they were in the water and then hang on as they stood up. All a bit too hair raising for me, mum! The elephants were gentle, happy to be handled and are let loose to graze in the jungle at night so we didn’t feel generally they were badly treated (I am not against riding them), I would just have liked more unrushed time to enjoy with them. The last afternoon on the way back, Chan took us to the elephant poo outlet (where they make items out of treated dung) which was interesting and all items for sale were good value and low price. He then took us to a small orchid and butterfly ‘farm’ which perhaps could be left out. I think we would have preferred say another couple of hours trekking or with the elephants instead. All in all, the most wonderful, informative experience which I highy recommend Visited January 2016 |
